Foot Orthotic Insoles – Miles to Walk! Where We Are?

Published By: IndustryARC Published On : 01-Jun-2015

In routine life, most of us give last priority to our feet unless and until we encounter any foot disease or sport injury. Foot Orthotic Insoles are the first line of therapy prescribed by the Podiatrists in many countries for sports and foot related diseases including diabetic neuropathy, plantar fasciitis, rheumatoid arthritis, walking imbalances resulting from flat feet and so on. Foot orthotic insoles readjust the pressure of the foot and therefore provide support, realignment and relief to the foot.

The foot orthotic insoles available in the market are generally made of rigid, semi-rigid and soft/ accommodative type based on nature of insole.

Foot Orthotic Insoles can be segmented as:

  • Custom Foot Insoles
  • Pre-fabricated Insoles

These are segmented based on manufacturing method. On one side, where pre-fabricated insoles dominates the market, these are also cost effective and can be purchased off the shelf without any prescription, custom foot insoles are manufactured on the custom basis and require prescription of foot specialist on the another side. Foot Specialists which includes Podiatrists,  Pedorthists or Chiropodists and Orthotists are increasingly prescribing the insoles in the treatment of foot related disorders across the globe.

Chronic diseases will drive the growth

Chronic foot related diseases such as plantar fasciitis, diabetic neuropathy and rheumatoid arthritis together comprises of major share for foot orthotic insoles market worldwide. According to a survey, plantar fasciitis was among the five most common foot and ankle injuries observed in professional athletes and 11-15% of all foot symptoms requiring professional care whereas, about 60 to 70 percent of people with diabetes have some form of neuropathy in the United States. Despite after several prevention and control programs run by the Government, these diseases will continue to thrive in the future resulting in the adoption of foot orthotic insoles, both custom-made and pre-fabricated.

Expensive custom foot insoles is dragging back the market

Although custom-made foot orthotic devices have plethora of advantages over the prefabricated foot insoles, the later insoles are widely used owing to affordability and easy availability. The prefabricated devices available in the market presently are technologically advanced and are available in a wide range and sizes to treat different disorders or diseases. Although such devices meet the needs of patients trying to manage pain and athletes using these devices for support, serious limb deformities and disorders require customized orthotics measured and manufactured by a certified foot specialist such as Pedorthist, Podiatrist or Orthotist. Such foot orthotic insoles promise a better quality of life to the users and are manufactured considering various parameters to fit to the patient and work the way they are intended to. Hence, the cost of modeling and manufacturing rise and significantly increase the final price of the foot insole.
